Amy Van Dyken won six Olympic gold medals for her record-breaking swimming abilities. Today, she won’t even go in a pool.
In 2014, the former Olympian was in an ATV accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Here, she says, she never looks at pools in the same way again. “This is where I was awesome,” Amy says in an Oprah: Where Are They Now? interview, looking down at her backyard pool. “The pool was my sanctuary. It was the place where I found myself. It was the place where I could get away from everything, and now it has become a place where I don’t want to be.”
“I feel paralyzed there,” Amy adds. “I don’t feel paralyzed any other time.”
Tune in for Oprah: Where Are They Now? Saturday, April 16, at 10/9c.
